What to Eat in Adrasan: Local Food Worth Trying

Adrasan is not a place for fine dining, and that is exactly its charm. Tables sit on the sand or on wooden platforms right over a cool little river, family members run the kitchens, and the vegetables often come from a garden out back. If you are staying a few nights, these are the things we tell our guests to try.

Breakfast by the river

The river that runs into the bay is lined with places serving long, slow breakfasts in the shade. Expect village eggs, goat’s cheese, olives, tomatoes, cucumber and local pine honey, often with fresh bread still warm. With the water running beneath your feet, it can easily become the best meal of the day.

Gözleme with wild greens

Thin dough is rolled out, filled and cooked on a domed griddle called a sac. The local favourite is filled with nettle, chard or whatever greens are in season. Pair it with ayran, a salty yoghurt drink, for a light lunch. Cheese and potato versions exist too, but try the herb one first.

Fish straight off the boat

At the beachfront restaurants you usually pick your fish from the counter and pay by weight. Sea bass and sea bream are always available; depending on the season you might also find red mullet or dentex. It is perfectly normal to ask the price before ordering.

Meze and samphire

Fish comes with small plates: sea samphire dressed in olive oil, smoky aubergine, thick garlicky yoghurt and sautéed wild herbs. Simple Mediterranean food, finished with good oil and a squeeze of lemon.

Fruit from Kumluca

Adrasan belongs to Kumluca, one of Turkey’s biggest greenhouse and citrus districts. In winter and spring roadside stalls sell oranges and mandarins by the bag; in summer it is tomatoes and watermelon. Many visitors drive home with a net of oranges in the boot.

Lunch on our Suluada trip

On our boat tour lunch is cooked on board and included in the price. For the main course you choose between chicken and fish, and tea and fruit are served too. You only need to bring water and sunscreen.
